As trailmen move up into the Navigators patrol they will begin to participate in more advanced activities like back country backpacking.  For a trailman to be successful on the trail, they need appropriate gear to ensure they are safe and ready for whatever they may run into on the trail. The following list is the 10 essentials each trailman should have when we go out into God's creation for overnight or multi-day backpacking trips. This list includes links to the items on Amazon, but they can be purchased on other sites or at stores as well.

  • Backpack – We recommend a beginner pack like the Teton Sports Scout 5400 (55L) backpack. It is a sturdy pack and the company has great customer service.

  • Tent or shelter – The troop has some backpacking tents, but if you prefer to purchase one this River Country Products is a great option.  In order to set this up, you do need trekking poles as it is frameless. This tent is available with or with out trekking poles. The link is to the one with poles included.

  • Water filtration system – a water filtration system is vital as even natural sources of water can carry bacteria. The Sawyer Squeeze is an easy one to use and is cheaper than many larger products.

  • Waterproof matches / flint & steel – A Firestarter is vital if you find yourself lost in the woods.  Always bring multiple options in case one gets wet or won’t light for some reason

  • Tent repair kit

  • Pocket Knife / Multi-tool

  • Headlamp or flashlight

  • Personal First Aid Kit

  • Rain coat/poncho (also think about temps we will face in the outdoors and bring appropriate coats, pants, gloves, etc.)

  • Compass with emergency whistle
